Ski resorts will also be subject to COVID-19 rules and regulations, as will most things in 2021. Despite the pandemic in health conditions, most Spanish ski resorts still plan to begin in 2021 and each ski resort in Spain will have the protocols in place for safe skiing, including frequent disinfection of ski lift contact areas and obligatory use of facial masks, among others. Have a look at four of Spain's best ski resorts, so that you can plan your next skiing vacation.

Baqueira Beret: snowboarding and skiing

Open for the 2021 reduced-capability ski season, Baqueira Beret resort in the Catalan Pyrenees is one of the most renowned in Spain and will receive you up to 130 centimeters of snow during 2021.

Baqueira has some of Spain's best snowboarding facilities, including 2 snowparks, Marmotes and Blanhiblar boardcross, which is ideal to start in snow because it's an easy tour and above all a lot of fun. On the contrary, there are three levels of difficulty in the Marmotes snowpark: beginner, intermediate and expert. Furthermore, Baqueira Beret uses both natural and artificial modules and changes them during the season.

Sierra Nevada: family skiing

Sierra Nevada, Europe's southernmost ski resort, has 100 pistes and some 90 kilometers of skiing terrain throughout the summer of the skiing season. If you're with the whole family, you'll find a free pass for children under 6 and you can have an enjoyable time in Pista de El Mar, a theme area of the resort. This part of the resort is especially suited for families in the Borreguiles area and is an area for children and adults to enjoy the snow.

Another excellent option is the Pista del Bosque, where children can find figures of forest animals which show them their way to an igloo camp which will certainly delight the little ones. And if all are tired of skiing and need a break, stop at the Chiki Club, the Sierra Nevada's family-run restaurant with children's motivations and furnishings that are suitable for every age.

Valdezcaray: perfect for budget skiers

Valdezcaray is a modest ski resort located in La Rioja, which generally has approximately 15 kilometers of skiing terrain and 20 open pistes. When you have a tight budget for your snow days, you'll find an adult ski pass of EUR 29, and if you're not considered a high season by the resort a few days a week, the pass costs even lower. Ski, boat and pole rentals are also very cheap compared with other ski resorts in Spain.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the resort is expected to open as planned in this season and the station has indicated on its website that it will make every effort to open up in the next month. And if you like to do something different after a few ski sessions, take advantage of rural tourism, gastronomy and wine tourism in La Rioja.

Candanchú: ski cross-country

Cross-country skiing, also known as Nordic skiing, is another type of skiing in Spain. With over 500km of routes in Spain, this is the ideal way for those who are not on big pistes to ski and to enjoy the stunning winter scenery.

The ski area in Candanchú is located in La Rinconada, with 3 circuits covering between 2,5 and 7,5 km. This area also has Spain's only biathlon facility, the popular Olympic Winter discipline, which combines cross-country skiing and gun shooting.

If you decide to spend your holidays in the Aragonese Pyrenees in Candanchu during this ski season, note that if you purchase a ticket for the season, this will include a free COVID guarantee. This means you will be refunded a proportion of the days you did not enjoy if the coronavirus prevented you from enjoying at least 15 days of your season ticket.
